Match 36 IPL 2017 (2017-04-30) @ Mohali (PCAS)
Delhi have won 4 of the last 7 matches between these 2 sides. When they met in Delhi at the start of the season Delhi set a decent total of 188 and then restricted Punjab to 137.
Punjab started the season well winning their first 2 matches. They have lost 5 of their 6 matches since then. The team is comprised of 4 overseas batsmen and an all Indian bowling attack. The seamers have been very expensive. The batsmen have failed to combine well as unit.
Delhi also started well, winning 2 of their first 3 matches. Since then they have lost 4 in a row. They have an inexperienced batting line up that struggled against the top bowling attacks of KKR, Mumbai and the Sunrisers. Delhi have an exceptional international pace bowling attack.
15 IPL matches have been played at Mohili since 2014. 8 have been won by the team batting first and 7 by the team batting second. With this match being a day game it is likely that whoever wins the toss will choose to bat first.
Delhi and Punjab both have the same Cricsq rating of 79.8 points. At the time of writing Delhi are available at 2.1 on Betfair. I prefer their bowling attack and think they should be favorites to win the match. They have lost their last 4 matches to the top teams in the league but have been competitive. I have backed them to win the match.
Punjab have a strong set of overseas players available to select from for their batting line-up. In their last match they were set 208 to win by The Sunrisers. They fell short reaching 181 in their 20 overs. Apart from Shaun Marsh scoring a brilliant 84 from 50 balls none of the players got going.
Alma has been in great form opening the batting. He has 299 runs from 7 innings with a strike rate of 146. He was missed in the defeat on Friday when he could not play due to injury. Martin Guptill played in his place. He scored 23 off 11 balls but could not go on and make a good score.
Alma normally opens with Manan Vohra. He scored just 3 from 6 balls against the Sunrisers. For the season he has 179 runs with a strike rate of 156. Marsh has now played 3 matches and scored 140 runs. He has cemented his place at 3.
Maxwell started the season well but his form has dipped in recent matches. The Punjab captain has 193 runs with a strike rate of 179.
The place for the final overseas player is between Morgan, Miller and Stoinis. They have all failed to score many this season and this has caused problems in the Punjab middle order.
Axar Patel has played well down the order scoring 138 runs and Saha has chipped in with 63 runs.
The only bowler not to go for more than 10 runs an over against The Sunrisers on Friday was Glen Maxwell. He bowled 4 overs and took 2 for 29.
Sandeep Sharma and Mohit Sharma normally open the bowling. Mohit has 6 wickets and Sandeep has 7. They have both gone at over 9 an over this IPL. Ishant Sharma has also been expensive going at almost 10 an over. Varun Aaron has 5 wickets with an economy rate of 8.9.
Natarajan was injured and could not play against the Sunrisers. He has good death bowling skills and was missed. He has played 3 matches and gone at 8.7 an over. Stoinis is the final seam bowler used. He has an economy rate of 10.6 an over. It may be worth KXIP trying Darren Sammy or Matt Henry as they could not do any worse than the seamers tried so far.
Axar Patel has bowled well. He is Punjab's top wicket taker with 8 and has gone at 8 an over. The second spinner is KC Cariappa. He has 4 wickets and has gone at 8.5 an over.
The Delhi batting line-up is very inexperienced having lost de Kock and Duminy before the season started. Against KKR on Friday they set a total of 160 in their 20 overs. This was way too short and was chased down with 14 balls to spare.
Sanju Samson opened with Karun Nair. Samson scored 60 from 38 balls. He is Delhi's top run scorer with 284 runs with a strike rate of 146. Nair has only 78 runs from 6 matches.
Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant batted at 3 and 4. Iyer scored 47 off 34 balls. In partnership with Samson they scored too slowly. Iyer has 151 runs in 5 innings. Pant has 147 runs from 7 innings and has a decent strike rate of 161.
Corey Anderson has now scored 43 runs from 4 innings batting in the middle order. Delhi need to bring Sam Billings back to open with Samson. Billings has 138 runs from 5 innings and will help the inexperienced Delhi players. Chris Morris has been in great form in the late middle order. He has 137 runs with a good strike rate of 167.
Dehli's bowling is based around an international pace attack. Zaheer Khan could only bowl 1.1 overs on Friday before being injured. He must be doubtful for this match.
Chris Morris is Delhi's top bowler with 12 wickets. He has an economy rate of 7.6. Pat Cummings has also been good taking 9 wickets at 7.4 runs an over. Kagiso Rabada has played the last 2 matches. He has 3 wickets with an exceptional economy rate of 6.9 an over.
With Nehra's injury they could play Mohammed Shami if they need an extra seamer. The other option is to play Shahbaz Nadeem as the second spinner to Amit Mishra. Nadeem has 4 wickets from 3 matches with an economy rate of 4.9 an over. Mishra is Delhi's first choice spinner. He has 7 wickets with an economy rate of 8.4 an over.
