Match 40 IPL 2017 (2017-05-02) @ Delhi (FSK)
The Sunrisers won the match between these 2 sides at the start of the season. Dhawan and Williamson both scored 50s to help build a score of 191. Dehli then mistimed the chase getting to 176 for 5 in their 20 overs with the powerful striker Chris Morris not facing a ball.
Since that match the Sunrisers have played 3 and won 2. In their last 2 matches against Punjab and KKR the Sunrisers have batted first and scored in excess of 200. Warner and Dhawan have had big opening partnerships and then Williamson has come in and hit quick runs. Both totals were defended easily thanks to great bowling led by Kumar and Khan.
Delhi won 2 of their first 3 matches and then lost 5 matches in a row. Their batting line-up is not performing. They put in their worst performance being bowled out for 67 against Punjab on Sunday. They were undone by a brilliant performance of 4 for 20 by Sandeep Sharma. Sandeep was missed when the Sunrisers smashed Punjab for 207 runs two days before.
The Delhi pitch favors the team batting second. 68% of IPL matches at Delhi have been won by the chasing team since 2014. However, both the Sunrisers and Dehli have strong bowling attacks and prefer to set totals.
The Sunrisers are clearly favorites for this match. They are 1.73 on Betfair at the time of writing compared to 2.34 for Delhi. Delhi's batting is playing badly and they need to build partnerships to get a decent total. Delhi have an excellent bowling attack. They will need to take early wickets and get Warner and Williamson out. If they can do this they can expose the underused Sunrisers middle order. I have backed Delhi as they are the value bet to turn things around this match.
Delhi produced their worst batting performance of the season when they were dismissed by Punjab for 67 on Sunday. When the top order failed against Mumbai Rabada and Morris managed to scrape them to 128. On Sunday the whole team failed.
Sam Billings was brought back to open with Sanju Samson on Sunday. He started the carnage when he was dismissed in the first over for a 2nd ball duck. Billings now has 138 runs from 6 matches. Samson is Delhi's top scorer with 289. He has a strike of 138.
Karun Nair has been batting at 3. He now has just 89 runs form 7 innings with a strike rate of 91. It might now be time for him to take a break.
Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant make up the top order. Iyer has 157 runs from 6 innings and Pant has 150 runs from 8 innings. Pant has a decent strike rate of 155.
Corey Anderson has been batting at 5 or 6 as an overseas all-rounder. He has been badly out of form scoring 61 runs from 5 innings. Chris Morris has 139 runs with a strike rate of 160. He is a good hitter down the order but has been coming in too early with the top order failing.
If Billings plays Anderson should be dropped and Pat Cummings brought back in. If Anderson plays Delhi should consider promoting Cummings up the order and dropping Billings. Using Cummings as a pitch hitter at the top of the order could change the attitude of batting unit.
Delhi have a very strong bowling attack. They have multiple options in selecting their seamers.
Chris Morris is their top wicket taker with 12. He has gone at 7.6 an over. He has been supported by Pat Cummings who did not play against Punjab. Cummings has 9 wickets with an economy rate of 7.4. Rabada was brought in 3 matches ago. He has 3 wickets with an economy rate of 7.4.
Zaheer Khan was injured and could not play against Punjab. He has 7 wickets with an economy rate of 8.2. He was replaced by Mohammad Shami. Shami has played 2 matches with an economy rate of 9.4.
Mishra is Delhi's top spinner. He has 7 wickets but has been expensive for a spinner going at 8.4 runs an over. Shahbaz Nadeem has 4 wickets in 4 matches. He has an exceptional economy rate of 5.5.
David Warner moved above Kohli and de Villiers to the top of the Cricsq T20 ratings with his 126 off 59 balls against KKR. It was another sensational knock from him. The Sunrisers opener is now the top run scorer in the IPL with 459 runs with a strike rate of 151.
Warner opens with Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan has 341 runs with a lower strike rate of 123. It is easy to be critical of his lower strike rate but he helps Warner build the solid foundation for the team most innings.
Kane Williamson has played in the last 4 matches. He has 204 runs batting at 3. He has a strike rate of 174. Yuvraj Singh has been disappointing batting at 4. He has 117 runs in 7 innings with a strike rate of 160.
Moises Henriques scored 2 fifties at 3 at the start of the season. Since Williamson has been included Henriques as moved down to the middle order. He has 200 runs with a strike rate of 141. He is joined in the middle order by Hooda and Ojha. Neither have scored many runs or faced many balls. They have not been needed with the top order batting so well.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the tournament's top wicket taker with 20 from 9 matches. He also has a decent economy rate of 6.4 an over. Ashish Nehra was rested against KKR. Nehra has 8 wickets with an economy rate of 9.6 an over.
Siddarth Kaul and Mohammed Siraj both bowled well against KKR. The seamers both had exactly the same figures of 2 for 26 off 4 overs. Kaul now has 7 wickets from 5 matches and Siraj has 4 wickets from 3 matches. They both have economy rates of 9 runs an over.
With the Indian seamers bowling so well Rashid Khan is keeping Mustafizur Rahman out of the side as an overseas player. Rahman will be joining the Bangladesh side soon so is unlikely to play any more part this IPL.
Rashid Khan has bowled and fielded brilliantly. The Afghan leg spinner has 12 wickets with an economy rate of 6.9 an over. Bipul Sharma has played in 5 matches with an economy rate of 7.3 an over. Other spin options include Hooda, Yuraj and Mohammed Nabi.
