Eliminator IPL 2017 (2017-05-17) @ Bangalore (MCS)
KKR have won 6 of the last 9 matches between these 2 sides. This season KKR won when the 2 sides met in Kolkata and lost in Hyderabad.
In Kolkata, KKR set 172 which SRH failed to chase down thanks to the bowling of the spinners Narine and Kuldeep Yadav. In Hyderabad, David Warner smashed 126 from 59 balls in a total of 209 which KKR never looked like chasing down.
KKR had a season of 2 halves in the League stage. They won 7 of their first 9 matches. At this point they were joint top of the League with the Mumbai Indians. They then lost 4 of their last 5 matches and slipped down the League to 4th place. In those matches they lost to all the other sides that are in the play-offs.
KKR have played exciting cricket. Recently they have opened with Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn. They both score very quickly. Narine is given a licence to try and hit every ball for a 4 or 6. Unfortunately this appears to have rubbed off on the rest of the team. No one is willing to dig in and play a sensible innings to get the side home. This was evident on Saturday when KKR failed to chase down 173 set by a weakened Mumbai side.
SRH have won 8 matches and lost 5. Their match against RCB at Bangalore was washed out. They had to win their last 2 matches against Mumbai and Gujarat which they successfully managed to do.
SRH have the top 2 run scorers in the IPL in David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan. They also have the top wicket taker in Bhuvneshwar Kumar. They have a key decision to make as to whether to play Mohammad Nabi or Kane Williamson as their final overseas player. Williamson has batted well but Nabi's spin has been exceptional in the later stages as the wickets have dried out. Nabi is likely to get the nod after Vijay Shankar scored 63 against the Lions when replacing Williamson in the top order.
The Bangalore pitch is usually a run-fest with the team batting first averaging 176 before 2017 in IPL matches. This season the average first innings score so far is 146. 3 out of the 7 totals were enough to defend.
The Sunrisers are rated 9 points ahead of KKR in the Cricsq ratings. They have 100 points whereas KKR have 91. At the time of writing KKR are favorites on Betfair at 1.96. SRH are 2.02. I have backed SRH to win this match. They have been more consistent throughout the tournament and have better recent form. They also have big match players like David Warner.
David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan open the batting for the Sunrisers. They are the 2 top run scorers in IPL 2017. Warner has 604 runs with a strike rate of 145. Dhawan has 468 runs with a strike rate of 129. Warner is capable of smashing a hundred off very few balls and playing a gritty innings on a tough pitch.
Moises Henriques batted at 3 against The Lions on Saturday. He has 277 runs from 11 innings with a strike rate of 136. He can also bat in the middle order. Kane Williamson has batted at 3 in 6 matches. He has 232 runs with a strike rate of 162.
Yuvraj Singh usually bats at 4. He has 243 runs from 10 innings with a strike rate of 145.
Vijay Shankar scored 63 from 43 balls in the win against The Lions on Saturday. He has only played 3 matches but he looks a useful prospect. If Nabi plays instead of Williamson as the final overseas player then Shankar should be included in the team.
Deepak Hooda and Naman Ojha have both batted in the middle order. Ojha has only batted 4 times dues to the success of the top order. He has 63 runs with a strike rate of 129. Deepak Hooda has 78 runs from 5 innings. Nabi will bat in the middle order if he plays. He has only had 1 bat this season.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the top wicket taker in the IPL. He has 25 wickets with an economy rate of 7 runs an over.
Ashish Nehra has only played 6 matches due to injury. This means it has been left to Siddarth Kaul and Mohammed Siraj to support Kumar in the seam attack.
Kaul has 16 wickets from 9 matches. He has gone at 8.3 an over. Siraj has been more expensive going at 9.2 an over. He has 10 wickets from 6 matches. Moise Henriques has also bowled seam he has been very expensive with an economy rate of 10.5 an over.
Spin will play an important role in this match. Chris Lynn for KKR had a strike rate of 107 against spin and 170 against pace in T20 matches before this IPL. If he opens the batting SRH need to bowl spin to him as soon as possible.
SRH have the Afghan spinners Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan in their squad. Mohammad Nabi has played the last 2 matches for the Sunrisers. He has 2 wickets now from 3 matches. He has an excellent strike rate of 5.3. He has bowled some over in the powerplay.
Rashid Khan has his leg-spin in all SRH's matches. He has 17 wickets with an economy rate of 6.7. Deepak Hooda and Yuvraj Singh have also bowled some spin this season. They have both been expensive going at over 10 an over.
Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine have opened the batting in recent matches. Lynn has 255 runs from just 5 innings. He has an exceptional strike rate of 186. Narine has been used as a pinch hitter at the top of the order. He has 214 runs with a strike rate of 178.
Gautam Gambhir usually opens. Since Chris Lynn has returned to full fitness Gambhir has dropped down to 3. He is KKR's top run scorer with 454. He has a strike rate of 128. Robin Uthappa bats next in the order. He has 386 runs with a strike rate of 168.
Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan and Colin de Grandhomme bat in the middle order. Pandey has 396 runs with a strike rate of 129. He started the season extremely well but his form has dropped off. He is struggling to time the ball and score quickly.
Pathan has 143 runs from 10 innings with a strike rate of 125. He seems unwilling to dig in and play a long innings. Colin de Grandhomme has also been disappointing. He has 126 runs from 8 innings with a strike rate of 138.
KKR have lost Chris Woakes as he has had to return to Europe to prepare for the Champions Trophy with England. He was KKR's top wicket taker with 17.
Umesh Yadav is now KKR's top seamer. He has 14 wickets with an economy rate of 8.7. KKR will be hoping that Nathan Coulter-Nile is fit to play in this match. He has been missing since he was hit on the head several matches ago. He has 11 wickets from just 6 matches. He has been expensive going at 9.1 an over.
Ankit Rajpoot has 4 wickets in 4 matches. He has been economical going at just 7.1 runs an over. Another seam option for KKR is Trent Boult. He has been expensive going at 9.5 in the 5 matches he has played in. He has 4 wickets.
Kuldeep Yadav and Sunil Narine are KKR's main spinners. Kuldeep has 12 wickets with an economy rate of 8.3. Narine has 10 wickets with an economy rate of 7.3. Piyush Chawla has also bowled spin in 4 matches. He has 3 wickets and has gone at 9.1 runs an over.
